Saif and I are not friends off the set

Rani missed out on doing Mira Nair's Namesake.

"I don't regret missing out on The Namesake. But I regret not working with Mira. I loved Jumpa Lahiri's novel and I love the film. Being a Bengali I completely relate to the ambience. So many of my aunts live in the US the way the protagonist does.

But I wasn't convinced about playing the mother of a 25-year old guy. And I said so to Mira. She completely understood my point of view. Also, Karan's film happened at the same time. I apologized to Mira. But I'm so fond of Mira. I love meeting her whenever I'm in New York.

In fact I bumped into her while shooting for Karan Johar's Kabhi Alvidaa Na Kehna. We were once shooting below her house. I'm very fond of her. And I'm sure we'll work together. The Namesake isn't Mira's last film, you know," Rani chortles.

Rani is very happy for Tabu. " Every role has a destiny. And I genuinely think Tabu was suited for the role. She was superb."

Rani's last release Baabul was a bit of a blown-up babble. Tell her that, and she jumps to the film's defence.

"To be very honest my parents wanted me to do Baabul. It's been quite a while since I had done a film on their say-so. And I'm happy that I did. Baabul was a cause every person relates to. See, a film has to touch a core audience. And Baabul did that. We made it with conviction."

Rani completely believes in Tara Rum Pum. "When I read the script I was so ecstatic I called Siddharth and whooped with joy. I completely identified with the script. I thought of my own mother who has handled all of us through every crisis. I've modeled my performance on my mother.

There're little moments in Tara Rum Pum that wrench your guts….And I got to play mother for the first time, to such professional kids. We had a lovely time because of them. Saif and I became children with the young actors. It's a story that will touch everybody."

And the third kid? "You mean Saif? It's so wonderful working with him. How much fun we have! Saif and I have grown together as an actor. Hum Tum was a breakthrough film for both of us. It got me my first best-actress award.

Hum Tum bonded us. He has come a long way from Hum Tum to Tara Rum Pum. Even I've changed with age and chemistry. Saif and I are not friends off the sets. We don't chat on the phone and we don't go out for dinner together. But on camera we share a great chemistry.

We're very helpful to each other. If he's stuck on a scene he doesn't hesitate to ask for my advice. I really wish Saif well. And I know he feels the same for me. And we're very vain about ourselves. We keep looking at each other's performances and patting each other on the back."

And the supposed fights they had in New York? "I never react to rumours. The truth was out when Saif and I talk about the film. Do you see any bitterness in either of us?"

Rani Mukherjee – apologetic yet arrogant

Rani Mukherjee may have apologised to the media but there was a certain brush of arrogance in her tone.

Rani apologised to the media for the scuffle that broke out in Varanasi between her bodyguards and journalists on Monday.

The incident tool place while Rani was shooting in the holy city for Chudiyan under the banner of Yashraj Films.

A day after, along with the apology, Rani sought a similar reaction from the media if they were at fault.

"On behalf of my production, I am apologising to the media if some misbehaviour has happened with the press. We will also want the press to apologise because if they have misbehaved then they should not be reluctant to say sorry," Rani said.

All her responses to media questions were heavily laced with sarcasm and made with a haughty and disdainful demeanor, leaving one wondering what she was trying to achieve through the press conference.

When a reporter interjected with a question just as Rani finished answering the previous one, in what appeared to be a premeditated response she flared, "Zara tameez se. Ek jane se baat kar rahe hain hum. (Behave yourself. I am speaking with someone already.)."

Then, realizing that she had actually finished answering the previous question, Rani continued, "Bataiye, kya aap ki kathinayee hai? (Tell me, what is your problem?)" Thinking his misery is over the reporter asked Rani about the story of the film.

Rani shot back, "Yeh nahin bata sakte. Bahut vaahiyaat sawaal hai. (I cannot tell. It is a very irresponsible question!)"

Another reporter suggested that she give a brief outline but Rani flatly refused, "We cannot give".

It is customary for film makers to explain the settings of the story on such occasions and Rani could have easily obliged. However, she had an agenda of her own.

"Just be happy that we have come and are shooting here," Rani said instead.

"The film fraternity and the press have a close bond. The point is that we should be subtle and good to each other," Rani added.

On Monday, the scuffle broke out when some journalists tried to get close to the crew members, including Rani and Konkona Sen Sharma , who were shooting on the banks of the River Ganga.

Media persons allege that the security of the crew members roughed them up.

"The things should be like, we go out of here after our shoot and give you our interviews and photo shoots and that's it. What is the point fighting and quarreling over it? The fact is that we both are not male actors, we are delicate females, so if people will create havoc, we would surely not like it," Rani said.

Pradeep Sarkar - directed ‘Chudiyan’ also stars mega superstar Amitabh Bachchan , Abhishek Bachchan and Jaya Bachchan .

Last seen with Rani in Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna , Abhi now awaits two films, Umrao Jaan and Guru , with Ash.

And now the latest tinsel tattle has it that Abhi and Rani have been paired once again for a Yash Raj flick. Filmmaker Aditya Chopra is said to have planned his next venture even as his present project Tara Rum Pum is on the floors.

The film will be a multi-starrer featuring a host of Bollywood stars. Apart from Abhi and Rani, Chopra is learnt to have finalized Konkana Sen , Kunal Kapoor , Jaya Bachchan and Anupam Kher .

The movie will mark the coming together of Abhishek and his mother for the first time in full-fledged roles in a Bollywood film.

The yet-untitled film will be based on a female centric theme. Rani and Konkana will play daughters of Jaya Bachchan and Anupam Kher. Abhi will be paired with Rani, and Kunal will play Konkana’s love interest.

Pardeep Sarkar director of critically acclaimed film Parineeta , has been roped in to direct the movie.

Earlier, Sarkar had approached Vidya Balan for the same role which is now offered to Konkana. But Vidya couldn’t be part of the project because of date problems.

The movie will be shot in Varanasi after the completion of ‘Tara Rum Pum’, which stars Rani and Saif Ali Khan.

Rani Mukerjee sorely missed!

Tickets for the gala red carpet screening of "Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna" (KANK) at Toronto's Roy Thomson Hall were, as expected, sold out well in advance. But no prizes for guessing that an overwhelming majority of those inside the auditorium that Sunday afternoon were people of Indian origin.

At the press conference earlier in the day, Amitabh Bachchan, Shah Rukh Khan and Karan Johar repeatedly insisted that their kind of cinema had an "Asian" audience.

But the turnout at the show belied that claim completely. Bollywood fans in the Greater Toronto area turned up not so much for the film as for a glimpse of their favourite stars. "Amitabh, Amitabh" and "Shah Rukh, Shah Rukh", they yelled deliriously.

The two megastars signed countless autographs, but it was difficult to say whether all this was helping the cause of Hindi cinema.

Where, pray, was the international audience that "KANK" was hoping to reach? This gala screening could well have been in an Andheri multiplex given the profile of the audience that it drew here.

Many in the audience had already seen the film more than once. "KANK" has been running in Scarborough and Mississauga for a while now.

The good news for Karan Johar is that, according to North American trade papers, the film has already collected upwards of $3.2 million from the box office in this part of the world, making it the biggest Bollywood overseas success ever.

Rani's absence was also felt at fest.

Some Bollywood fans here were sorely disappointed that the popular Rani Mukerji, the lead actress of "KANK", could not make it to the Toronto gala screening despite being stationed just a brief flight away in New York.

Apart from the fact that she is currently busy with the shoot of Siddharth "Hum Tum" Anand's "Ta Ra Rum Pum" on locations in and around the Big Apple, the organisers of the 31st Toronto International Film Festival revealed that a delay in rustling up a Canadian visa for her prevented Rani Mukerji from hopping over to Toronto for the gala.

As a result of the Rani no-show, there is no Bollywood diva in Toronto this year. The festival has attracted a stream of male stars though - Amitabh, Shah Rukh, John Abraham and Arshad Warsi, the last two representing the Yashraj Films-produced "Kabul Express".

The glamour quotient would surely have soared much higher if Rani or the other "KANK" lady, Preity Zinta, had been here.

Rani Mukherjee turns glamorous for 'Tara Rum Pum'

Rani Mukherjee is shedding her simple look for a glamorous one in Siddharth Anand’s movie Tara Rum Pum .

The talented actress was last seen in a somewhat traditional look in Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna in which she wore expensive saris, had kohled eyes and kept her hair open.

In ‘Tara Rum Pum’, however, we will get to see an altogether different avatar of the actress.

Not only is Rani sporting an entirely different hairstyle in the film, she is also wearing very western outfits, something she seldom does before the camera.

‘Tara Rum Pum’ is currently being shot in New York. The movie brings Rani and Saif Ali Khan together again after their successful film Hum Tum two years ago.

The first pictures from the shooting sets of ‘Tara Rum Pum’ show a completely transformed Rani. She is looking attractive and sexy in her new avatar.

Saif, on the other hand, has grown back his hair after the short crop of Omkara . He has also shaved off his stubble.

Director Siddharth Anand says the film is a modern love story set in the US. It is a lighthearted tale of a relationship of mutual love and conflict between the two characters played by Saif and Rani.

Siddharth previously directed Saif in Salaam Namaste . Although he has repeated Saif in his second film, he opted for Rani instead of Preity Zinta because “Rani suited the role better,” says Anand.

‘Tara Rum Pum’ is being produced by Yash Raj Films. There is a possibility that Abhishek Bachchan might play a cameo in the film.

The 53rd National Film Awards, finally ended after a three-week-long exercise conducted by a 12-member feature films jury and a six-member non-features panel, and the results are delivered to the Information and Broadcasting Ministry.

But the names of the winners cannot be formally made public as the legal grey areas are still to be negotiated.

The member of the feature and non-feature juries was headed by veteran south Indian actress B Saroja Devi and television personality Siddharth Kak respectively.

While the award winners are still to be announced, unofficial reports confirm that Amitabh Bachchan has won, what will be his second (previously Agneepath, 1990) Best Actor National Award for his universally saluted performance in “Black” defeating Kerela superstar Mohanlal and our very own Anupam Kher by a meager margin, while the same film got the coveted Best Hindi Feature Film.

After a huge debate over the decision for the Best Actress Award, Sarika is adjudged Best Actress in ‘Parzania’ for her performance as a Parsi mother searching for her son missing since the Gujarat riots of 2002. This was the year’s major upset as Rani Mukherjee appeared to be a sure shot winner for her scintillating performance of a blind, deaf and mute girl in ‘Black’.

Naseeruddin Shah has been adjudged the Best Supporting Actor for his widely applauded performance of a star cricketer fallen on lean days in ‘Iqbal’.

A Special Jury Award has been given to Anupam Kher for his sensitive portrayal in ‘Maine Gandhi Ko Nahin Maara’ of an old man psychologically ravaged by the loss of ideals around him.

Aparna Sen’s ‘15 Park Avenue’ bagged the Best English language National Film Award.

US-based filmmaker Rahul Dholakia got his first Best Director Award for the film ‘Parzania’, while ‘Kalpurush’ is awarded the Best Film.

Member of the same illustrious film family from which Kajol draws her lineage Rani Mukherjee may still be at a distance from the citadel that houses her cousin. But there is no doubt about the light-eyed Bengali girl's mass appeal. Moreover, Rani Mukherjee is putting all her efforts and working hard to reach there.

Precocious yet innocently oblivious of it, it is the actress's unassuming self which draw friends and well-wishers to her.

Producers made a beeline for Rani Mukherjee's door (she was riding high on the success of Ghulam and Kuch Kuch Hota Hai) and just as Rani Mukherjee was gradually shifting positions towards the top in the popularity charts, she started getting the jolts. Good nature did not really help Rani Mukherjee in gaining stronghold and consolidating her position in Mumbai.

Films like Baadal cast a shadow on her prospects. The film left theatres in India without a whimper. Hope was alive in the form of Hadh Kar Di Aapne, which was in the pipeline. Rani Mukherjee had faith in Govinda and David Dhawan's saleability at the box office. Unfortunately, the film failed to raise a laugh and the cash boxes did not ring.

Rani Mukherjee tried to remain unfazed. She was looking towards the future and Hey Ram. As an actress, Rani Mukherjee was proud to be associated with an actor-director of Kamal Haasan's caliber and was thrilled to have Hey Ram in her lap. Even Hey Ram did not propel her career to the extent Rani Mukherjee had expected. There wasn't any critical appreciation of her performance in the film. Infact, Rani Mukherjee's fans became aloof when they saw their favorite actress locked in a passionate kiss in the film.

The actress does not regret though. ''I wanted to work with Mr. Kamal Haasan. The rest did not matter'' Rani Mukherjee said in an interview some time ago.

Rani Mukherjee has since appeared in hits like Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham (2001), Saathiya (2002), Chalte Chalte (2003), Hum Tum(2004), and Veer-Zaara (2004).
